Kahaani (2012)

Kahaani is a good thriller kahaani (story) as it claims. I just finished watching it and the ending really surprised me. I should admit I never guessed what’s coming at the end. But I won’t say anything about the ending and spoil your entertainment of course.

It starts with a terrorist attack in Kolkata in metro and then we see Vidya (Vidya Balan) arriving to Kolkata, to find her husband who is missing for a while. Vidya and her husband Arnab are both London-based software engineers and Arnab comes to Kolkata to work in National Data Center on a project for a short period. But after some time he stops calling and Vidya believes that something happened to him and comes to Kolkata to find him even though she is pregnant.

She goes the police and a police officer helps her in her searches. But it seems like there is no evidence that Arnab came to Kolkata, worked in National Data Center or stayed in the hotel as he told. Nobody seems to remember him or met him.

Then Vidya finds out about a man called Milan Damji who looks just like her husband and who also worked in National Data Center. She thinks that there is a connection with him and her husband’s missing so she decides to go after Milan and convinces the police officer Rana to help her.

Kahaani starts likes a Hollywood movie and keeps this image throughout the movie. It is filmed in Kolkata, using guerrilla film making technique so we see a more realistic image of a big city in India, the airport, streets, metro etc. This makes the movie very real. Also Vidya portrays a very independent, strong, determined and clever woman. She survives in men’s world and takes an active role in her husband’s search even though she is pregnant and discouraged by many men which is also so unusual.

I like this movie very much, it kept me on my toes until the end and I kept wondering what’s going to happen next. After The Dirty Picture, I believe Vidya Balan made another clever move and had a leading role in thriller movie like this. This is completely different than her recent role and she is also good in this. Have you also realized that she is the leading role in the movie? Usually we see the story through a man’s eye in Bollywood…

It seems like a new trend started in Bollywood and we get to see quite different movies, which might be considered off-beat comparing the classical Bollywood. I can’t wait to see what’s coming next!
